ABS, MOL in Landmark Gas Carrier Pact

ABS and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd. (MOL) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to collaborate on up to 14 new gas carriers.The agreement covers seven new-build Very Large Ethane Carriers (VLEC) and up to seven new-build Liquefied Natural Gas Carriers (LNGC) designed to carry gas from the U.S. to China and other global markets.ABS will provide plan review, survey, inspection and other classification services for vessels, machinery and equipment as well as assist with managing the requirements for foreign flag carriers calling at U.S.

V.Group: Proactive Approach to 2020 Needed

V.Group has urged shipowners and operators to take a proactive approach to 2020 compliance. With the global sulphur cap less than nine months away, V.Group is seeing growing numbers of shipowners and operators developing Ship Implementation Plans (SIPs) to mitigate risks and minimize disruption.It is predicted that most ships will burn ultra low sulphur fuel oils (ULSFOs) to comply with the suplhur cap legislation, switching from high sulphur fuel oil (HFO) to ULSFOs with a sulphur content at, or below, 0.50%, unless equipped with scrubbers.

“Jafar Jabbarli“ dry cargo vessel owned by Marine Transport Fleet of CJSC Azerbaijan Caspian Shipping Company has been overhauled by “Zigh” ship repair yard. A lot has been done during the overhaul which took almost a year. All corroded metal layers available in the hull, deck, cargo storage facility and other parts of the vessel with a safe load capacity of 3850 tons were replaced, and 350 tons of metal were used for this purpose. State cabins were overhauled in line with modern standards and supplied with new equipment and furniture.

Keppel Singmarine Pte won contracts from Van Oord to build two Trailing Suction Hopper Dredgers (with an option for a third), the shipbuilder announced, scheduled for completion in 4Q 2020 and 2Q 2021 respectively. ABS Approves New VLEC Concept

ABS to Class LNG Bunker Barge

ABS, a leading provider of classification and technical services to the marine and offshore industries, was selected by Q-LNG, LLC, to class an Articulated Tug Barge (ATB) for LNG bunkering in North America. The vessel is scheduled to begin construction at VT Halter Marine in Pascagoula, Mississippi, in early 2018. “This project represents another significant milestone for the region in the continued development of LNG infrastructure in North America, helping the maritime industry meet stricter emissions requirements,” says ABS Chairman, President and CEO, Christopher J. How to Reduce the Risk of Engine Room Fires

Tony Watson, Risk Assessor at UK P&I Club in conjunction with Burgoynes, highlights the risk and impact of engine room fires onboard ships, and recommends steps to prevent and supress fires. Research coordinated by IMO has indicated that between 30 and 50 percent of all fires in merchant ships originate in the engine room and 70 percent of those fires are caused by oil leaks from pressurised systems. Following a major engine room fire it is rare that a ship is able to proceed under her own power.

Hoerbiger and L’Orange GmbH, Stuttgart, a subsidiary of the Tognum Group, are working together to enhance their product portfolio for the equipping of two- and four-stroke engines in the power class of 100 kW per cylinder and higher. LR Addresses Fuel Changes when Entering and Exiting ECAs

From January 1, 2015, the maximum sulphur content of fuel oil used within the MARPOL Annex VI Emission Control Areas (ECAs) will be 0.10%, unless using an approved alternative means for controlling sulphur emissions. In most cases, the fuel used will be low-sulphur distillate oil (LSDO). Many ships operating both inside and outside ECAs will changeover between LSDO and residual fuel oil (RFO) when entering and exiting ECAs. The Society For Gas as a Marine Fuel (SGMF) is launched as new Non-Governmental Organisation to enhance safety and best practices in the use of LNG as a ship fuel. Following a decision to proceed by the Board of Directors of the Society of International Gas Tanker and Terminal Operators (SIGTTO) at its spring meeting in Houston, the Society for Gas as a Marine Fuel (SGMF) is to be established as a new non-governmental organisation (NGO). “The use of LNG as a marine fuel presents a major challenge for the shipping industry over the coming years,” states Luc Gillet, SIGTTO President.

On Board Fuel Blending

Dennis de Bruin, Marine Director at BMT Surveys, explains the current issues and new regulations concerning the on-board blending of fuels. Fuel oils are mainly a blend of oils and other components, for example; aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzene, toluene and xylene. Gasoline, for instance, is a refined product of petroleum, consisting of a mixture of hydrocarbons, additives and blending agents. Its composition varies widely depending on the crude oils used, the refinery processes, the type of product demanded and its specifications.

John Deere Introduces Tier 3 Lineup

John Deere Power Systems (JDPS) announced that it will meet U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Marine Tier 3 emissions regulations with a complete lineup of diesel engines from 74-559 kW (99-750 hp) .New PowerTech 9.0L and 13.5L Tier 3 propulsion and generator-drive engines join the previously announced 4.5L and 6.8L Tier 3 models, offering customers choices for commercial and recreational applications. John Deere Tier 3 marine engines meet current European Union emissions requirements for propulsion engines used on recreational crafts and inland waterway vessels.

Mount Whitney Dry Docking Nears Completion

The U.S. 6th fleet’s command and control ship USS Mount Whitney (LCC 20), entered the final stages of its renovation and overhaul at the Viktor Lenac shipyard, in Rijeka, Croatia, July 11, 2015. After successfully completing the majority of a seven-month docking, renovation, overhaul, and at sea trial, Mount Whitney is weeks from returning to its forward deployed port of Gaeta, Italy. Mount Whitney underwent a three-day sea trial in the Adriatic Sea to test the operational capability of the vessel.

First LNG Fuelled Tug for Middle East by Wärtsilä

Drydocks World (DDW) based in Dubai, UAE, has contracted Wärtsilä to design and supply the propulsion and other equipment for a new harbour tug that will operate on liquefied natural gas (LNG). This will be the first harbour tug in the Middle East region to operate on gas. The order was signed in November. The 29-meter-long tug is the first of a series of nine such vessels to be built and operated by DDW. The project is part of a green initiative launched by the Dubai government, and is intended to set an example for promoting environmental sustainability throughout the region.
