Hamburg Süd’s Chief Commercial Officer to retire
German container shipping company Hamburg Süd said its Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) Frank Smet will retire at the end of March after roughly 27 years with the company.Smet, who has been working in the shipping industry for over 40 years – including in Brazil, Chile, Australia and Hong Kong – has been a member of Hamburg Süd’s Management Board since 2012. He was initially responsible for Network, Operations and Logistics before assuming responsibility for Sales and Customer Service in 2017.In the future, Hamburg Süd CEO Dr. Arnt Vespermann will also be responsible for the customer relations.
Hamburg Süd Launches Remote Container Management
All Hamburg Süd customers can use the new Remote Container Management (RCM) technology for their reefer container shipments. RCM monitors parameters such as temperature, relative humidity, and the concentrations of O2 and CO2 within the reefer container in real time. The added value of using RCM is that it enables customers to use this data to monitor their supply chain better, to make it much more efficient and reliable, and to thereby leverage great potential for cost savings.

Hamburg Süd christened the Polar Ecuador containership in Antwerp.The new vessel belongs to a group of four structurally identical vessels in the Polar class that have been built for Hamburg Süd by the Chinese shipyard Jiangsu New Yangzi Shipbuilding. Hamburg Süd: Upgrades Asia – Europe/Mediterranean network
Since February 2017, Hamburg Süd, through its partnership with 2M, has been able to offer its customers access to the world’s most comprehensive Asia – Europe/Mediterranean network. As part of a regular network review, and in an effort to enhance schedule reliability, the decision has been made to rearrange this network in the second half of the second quarter in 2018. Increased buffer times and eliminated duplicate port calls throughout the network allows schedules to better absorb delays and therefore reduces the need to omit ports.
Hamburg Süd to Launch New Asia-Americas Service
Beginning in April, Hamburg Süd is launching a new service network between Asia and South America West Coast, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. Maersk, Hamburg Süd Enter Slot Purchase Deal
Container shippers Maersk Line and Hamburg Süd announced a slot purchase agreement for Hamburg Süd’s volumes on the East–West trades to be shipped on vessels in the 2M network. Maersk Line acquired Hamburg Süd in December 2016, and the two are party to a number of such operational agreements worldwide. Due to changes in the global liner alliances, the agreement follows commercial negotiations in anticipation of the termination of Hamburg Süd’s current slot purchase arrangements on the East–West trades.
Aliança: Second Flagship in the Cabotage Fleet Christened
With the christening of the new container ship “Vicente Pinzón”, the Hamburg Süd subsidiary Alianҫa has -- for the moment -- completed the expansion and modernization of its fleet.
