Who Will Bin the Noon Report? [Op Ed]

Virtually every shipping company today uses noon reports to understand and monitor what is happening on their ships. These reports are traditionally sent by the Captain every day, based on data gathered manually by the crew. The content and format of the report is usually pre-agreed by the company and sent at noon. The noon report has grown over the years to give a snapshot of what has happened on board the ship since the previous noon i.e., in the last 24 hours. Since the time between noons is based on the time kept by the ship, this is not always 24 hours.

Driving Operational Change with Data-driven Analytics

Real-time reporting and data analysis are key tools to understanding and improving complex operating environments of today’s companies where the overall effects of any individual action can be very difficult to identify without a proper tool set at hand. Identifying and continuously improving best practices are also best served by the same process which then allows shipowners and operators to see what’s happening underneath all the noise — to find what otherwise would be lost in the variance of the data.

Due diligent trim optimization and monitoring of hull fouling resistance can mean potential annual fuel savings for tankers.

Trim Optimization

In a challenging market, commercial shipping operators must be particularly astute in the way they run their fleets. Trim optimization has been revealed to be a powerful means of increasing propulsion energy efficiency, but does this apply to all vessel types and what level of savings is possible? An unprecedented new study by Eniram (www.eniram.fi), Finnish provider of energy management solutions for the shipping industry, has some answers. Melvin Mathews, former VLCC Captain and now Director of Regulatory and Environmental Solutions at Eniram, considers the implications for fleet owners.

Effects of Hull Fouling on Cruise Ships Study

Eniram collected data from + 60 cruise vessels & 38,000 sea days to highlight the financial impact of fouling across different sea areas. Eniram Limited, the Finnish provider of real-time decision support solutions for the shipping industry, has revealed its analysis on the effects of hull fouling on cruise vessels in different sea areas.
