Annual Towing Forum Returns to SUNY Maritime
For nearly 20 years, leaders of the tug and barge industry in the region have converged on SUNY Maritime College in the spring to discuss current issues and initiatives facing the industry. This year will be no different; the 18th annual Towing Industry Forum will include presentations about safety management systems, wind farms and their impact on marine traffic, and a federal study regarding route planning and access to East Coast ports, among other topics. SUNY Maritime Seniors Redesign Campus Power Grid
Fourteen light bulbs, representing electrical loads at different parts of campus, attached to a large plywood board lit up then, controlled by a sensor, turned off one by one or in small groups. The board, though several square feet, was nowhere near as large as what it was made to represent – the 55-acre campus of SUNY Maritime College. It was one of four or five senior design capstone projects in the electrical engineering program. The task was to rebuild the college’s electrical grid using renewable energy.

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) today announced up to $20 million for a new research and development (R&D) round dedicated to industry-partnered projects that seek to develop and commercialise renewable energy technologies. Coast Guard Academy Cadet to Receive Fulbright Scholarship
Stephen Horvath, a first class cadet at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, was recently granted a two-year Fulbright Scholarship to study renewable energy technologies in Finland during the 2015-2016 academic year and the 2016-2017 academic year. Horvath, 21, will pursue a master’s degree at the Lappeenranta University of Technology in Lappeenranta, Finland. The mechanical engineering major plans to conduct a research project on methods for energy storage. Horvath’s research project will examine the conversion technologies used to store energy created from wind turbines and solar cells.
