Matson Names Dreyfus VP, Alaska

Matson has announced that Branton B. "Bal" Dreyfus has been appointed vice president, Alaska, succeeding Kenny Gill, who has resigned from the company.In his new role, Dreyfus has management responsibility for all Matson operations in Alaska, including terminal operations, customer service, sales, and financial performance of the company's terminals in Anchorage, Kodiak, and Dutch Harbor. APM Terminals Tacoma Ends Lease

APM Terminals Tacoma concluded its operations on September 30, 2017, ahead of the December 31, 2017 lease expiration date, transferring the lease to Seattle-based SSA Marine who formed a new joint venture with Matson Lines, called SSAT, starting operations October 2, 2017. APM Terminals Tacoma was used primarily by the Matson Alaska Service, with twice-weekly sailings between Tacoma, Anchorage and Kodiak, Alaska, and a weekly service between Tacoma and Dutch Harbor, Alaska, handling a combined 190,000 TEUs in 2016. Matson Completes Upgrade of Alaska Fleet

Matson has welcomed Matson Anchorage back to Alaska following three months of work to upgrade the vessel, including the installation of new equipment that virtually eliminates particulate matter and sulfur from engine exhaust, making it one of the cleanest ships operating in Alaska. Matson Anchorage was the last of Matson's three D7 Class containerships serving Alaska to receive the new equipment. Sister ships Matson Kodiak and Matson Tacoma underwent the same upgrade work and were returned to service last year.

APM Could Exit Tacoma

APM Terminals Tacoma has received notification from Matson, Inc., its main customer, that Matson does not intend to renew its current terminal services agreement after its expiration on December 31, 2017. Accordingly, APM Terminals is evaluating all options with respect to its existing terminal lease, which is currently set to expire on December 31, 2017. The terminal, with 12 employees, became part of the Maersk Group portfolio with the acquisition of US-based Sea-Land Service by Maersk Line in 2000.

Memorial Fund Set Up for Families of Lost Fishing Crew

Joining members of the maritime community to assist families of the six crew members of the FV Destination that went missing in the Bering Sea on February 11, 2017, Peoples Bank is now collecting donations for the families of the missing crew members. Donations to the F/V Destination Memorial Fund can be made at all Peoples Bank locations throughout Western Washington, and Peoples Bank, a long-time banking partner for the North Pacific Fleet, will not take any fees associated with the contributions made to this fund.

Matson Pumps $30 Million into Alaska Operations

Ocean cargo shipper Matson, Inc. said it is moving quickly to fund improvements in its new Alaska operations following its May 29 acquisition of Horizon Lines' Alaska services. The company expects to invest more than $30 million in new equipment planned by Horizon prior to its acquisition. According to the shipper, equipment upgrades to be made over the next three months include 2,000 new standard 40-foot dry containers for general cargo, a new 65-ton gantry crane for Kodiak Terminal…

'Kayaktivists' to Launch Blockade of Shell Icebreaker

A small group of protesters and activists are gathering at the Cathedral Park boat ramp in Portland, preparing to stay for a 24-hour vigil as they wait for Royal Dutch Shell Oil's icebreaker ship, the MSV Fennica, to depart from Portland for the Arctic, reports Reuters. Following the lead of protesters in Seattle who tried to block ships headed for Shell's planned oil exploration in the Chukchi Sea, the Portland "kayaktivists" said they would conduct a vigil overnight on the Willamette River, which runs through downtown Portland.

Matson Promotes Gill as Alaska VP

Matson, Inc. has promoted Kenny Gill to the position of Vice President, Alaska. One of the best-known commercial fishing vessels in the world, the Cornelia Marie, has just undergone life-extending surgery. The Bering Sea crabber has gained a wide public following both for the family saga of ownership and for her role in the television series Deadliest Catch that portrays the challenges of one of the world’s toughest fisheries. When Roger Thomas and his partner Kari Toivola began searching for a Bering Sea crab investment, Roger called Casey McManus. Casey has skippered the Cornelia Marie and is a shareholder in the boat.

Shipping Company Sentenced for Dumping Oil

Dauelsberg GmbH & Co. KG, a German company, was sentenced in U.S. federal court June 3 to pay a total of $750,000 in fines and community service payments for violating the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships by intentionally discharging 1,780 gallons of oily water into the sea off the coast of Alaska and then presenting false records to the U.S. Coast Guard. Shell Barge Arrives in Alaska

The Arctic Challenger, an oil spill containment barge, that had left Bellingham, north of Seattle, and was headed toward Dutch Harbor, in Unalaska, off mainland Alaska,  reached port in Alaska on Wednesday, June 10, for a brief stop before heading to the Chukchi Sea to support exploratory oil drilling. The vessel is moored on the Aleutian Islands in Dutch Harbor, where the U.S. Coast Guard is beefing up its patrols in case activists show up at the fishing community to protest Royal Dutch Shell’s plans to drill this summer, according to KTUU TV.

ISS Opens New Americas Office

Inchcape Shipping Services (ISS) said it has expanded its operations in North and Central America with the opening of a new office in Anchorage, Alaska.    The new office will give ISS a physical presence in this strategically important area of Alaska, with the team focusing on offshore logistics in support of the regional oil and gas industry.    Jessica Davis has been appointed as Port Manager for the Anchorage office. With 12 years’ experience in the shipping industry, Jessica previously worked in Dutch Harbor, Alaska.

Members of the G6 Alliance  released details on port rotations for the proposed service expansion to the Asia-North America West Coast and Trans-Atlantic trade lanes, announced in early December last year. Shipmaster Failed to Report Ship Adrift in Aleutian Pass

Coast Guard investigators have finished a one month investigation into the operation of the 874 ft. long 'Bangkok Bridge' in Dutch Harbor. Two investigators, one from Coast Guard Sector Anchorage and one from Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment Dutch Harbor, assessed a $75,000 penalty for failure to report a hazardous condition. The investigation began after MSD Dutch Harbor personnel received a report of a distressed deep draft vessel in Unimak Pass, a highly trafficked pass for commercial vessels on the Aleutian Chain.

Horizon Lines, Inc. has announced that William A. Hamlin has been named Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. In his new role, Mr. Hamlin will continue to report to Sam Woodward, President and Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Hamlin joined Horizon Lines in March 2011 as Senior Vice President of Operations. Day on Bering No Ordinary Day

US Coast Guard cutter 'Munro' navigated shifting ice fields to close on Bering Sea fishing fleet, then rendered emergency medical help. While the weapons and operations departments were wrapping up the day’s second boarding, a radio call reached Munro’s bridge from fishing vessel Nordic Fury, then only three miles away. A member of their crew had suffered deep lacerations to his hand, which had been partially crushed freeing a net fouled in the vessel’s screws. Justice Dept to Consider Shell Arctic Rig Shortcomings

The Coast Guard found serious safety & environmental violations on 'Noble Discoverer' used in Arctic waters off Alaska. The Coast Guard found 16 violations on the Noble Discoverer, one of Shell’s two drilling rigs for Alaska’s Arctic waters. The company’s other rig, the Kulluk, has its own troubles, reports the Anchorage Daily News. The Noble Discoverer is a converted log carrier owned and operated by Noble Corp. for Shell’s Arctic efforts. The 514-foot-long rig was built in 1966 and converted into a drilling ship 10 years later.

Jensen Maritime Designs Harley Tugs & Barge

Crowley Maritime subsidiary, Jensen Maritime complete design of 2 ASD tugboats & a deck cargo barge for Harley Marine. Seattle-based naval architecture and marine engineering company Jensen Maritime recently completed the designs of two new ASD tugs, based on the popular Valor tugboat design, and a 250’ x 70’ x 15’ 8” deck barge for customer Harley Marine, a Seattle-based marine transportation provider. The tugs, named Robert Franco and Ahbra Franco, will provide tanker escort and ship assist services along the U.S. West Coast once delivered.

Shell's 'Kulluk' Declared Free to Proceed

The Coast Guard has lifted the order restricting the movement of the conical drilling unit 'Kulluk' from Kiliuda Bay, Alaska. “I reviewed all of the relevant and available information and determined that Shell has met the requirements of the Captain of the Port Order,” said Capt. Paul Mehler III, commander Coast Guard Sector Anchorage and Captain of the Port, Western Alaska. Coast Guard Icebreaker Begins 2012 Arctic Missions

U.S. Coast Guard Cutter 'Healy' begins the first of three Arctic missions scheduled during 2012. Healy departed its homeport of Seattle July 30, for a deployment that will include three missions that support scientific research in the Arctic. After a brief stop in Dutch Harbor for logistics and to welcome aboard the 38 members of the HLY-12-01 science party, the cutter continued its northbound transit through the Bering Strait to the Chukchi Sea. Tug & Barge Salvaged Off Alaskan Coast

Response crews complete salvage of tug 'Polar Wind' & its barge 'Unimak Trader' from Ukolnoi Island, 40 miles east of Cold Bay. The five-person crew of the Polar Wind was rescued Nov. 13 after the tug ran aground and began taking on water. The crew was reportedly attempting to recover the barge after their towline parted. The fuel quantity aboard the Polar Wind at the time of the grounding was estimated to be more 20,500 gallons of diesel and the barge was reportedly carrying 1,800 gallons of diesel.

US Fab, a Vigor Industrial company, will soon begin construction on a 250’x70’x15’8” deck barge for Harley Marine Services at Vigor’s Swan Island shipyard in Portland, Oregon. This purpose built barge was designed by Jensen Maritime Consultants to transport a wide variety of cargo between Dutch Harbor and Akutan, Alaska with up to 3 runs per week. “Having the ability to collaborate with Jensen and Harley during the initial production design for this barge, will allow us to have maximum efficiency during construction,” said Bryan Nichols, Sales Manager at Vigor Industrial.

Owners Shell confirm that 'Kulluk' safe to tow from Kiluda Bay to Dutch Harbor & await arrival of heavy-lift semi submersible vessel for the 'dry tow'. The Unified Command has been stood down. “Agency representatives will return to their normal roles and responsibilities," said Capt. Paul Mehler III, the Coast Guard Federal On-Scene Coordinator. After weeks of thorough assessment, analysis and on board activity, Shell confirmed that the Kulluk is safe to tow out of Kiliuda Bay.
