Norwegian ship designer Ulstein has received a contract to design the fourth expedition cruise vessel for Miami-based SunStone Ships, in their Infinity series.The vessel, which will be constructed at the China Merchants Heavy Industries (CMHI) yard in China, is a CX103 design featuring the X-BOW and designed by Ulstein Design & Solutions.The SunStone ship design contracts were the first cruise contracts for Ulstein, a ship design company with long experience from the offshore industry.

Miami-based SunStone Ships has declared option number two at CMHI shipyard after signing a long-term charter contract with Victory Cruise Line for the vessel, with a total of three newbuilds now under construction at the Chinese yard.A press release from the manager of passenger ships across the globe said that it originally placed one firm contract and nine options on Ulstein deliveries of expedition cruise vessel designs and equipment packages back in 2017.All ten vessels are part of SunStone Ships’ series of vessels in the ‘INFINITY-class’.
Cruise Shipping: Virgin Orders a Fourth Ship from Fincantieri
Fincantieri and Virgin Voyages signed a $791m contract for the construction of a fourth cruise ship, which will be delivered at the end of 2023.The new vessel will be a sister-ship of the three ships on order with Fincantieri. Construction is underway at the Sestri Ponente shipyard (Genoa) and the first three ships will enter Virgin Voyage’s fleet respectively in 2020, 2021 and 2022.The fourth vessel will be approximately 110,000 gross tons, 278 meters long and 38 meters wide.
Acta Marine’s Newbuild Completes Sea Trials
The SOV W2W vessel Acta Auriga, currently under construction at Ulstein Verft, Norway for owner Acta Marine, has successfully completed sea trials. The walk-to-work vessel is custom-designed for the offshore energy industry. Together with a 3D crane, SMST gangway and elevator tower, and the X-BOW and X-STERN design solutions, the vessel will break new grounds in workability, in-field agility, offshore logistics and comfort on board for 120 persons combined with a low fuel consumption, the builder said.
Fjord1 Orders Seven Battery-Powered Ferries with Havyard
Havyard Group will be delivering the design for seven battery-powered ferries to Norwegian transportation company Fjord1, five of which will be built at the company’s own shipyard. Havyard and Fjord1 will thereby continue their partnership to achieve a green revolution on the Norwegian fjords. With this contract, Havyard Group has orders for 13 battery ferries at its own yard and has sold 12 battery ferry designs. The Honghua Group Limited has awarded a $12 million front-end engineering design (FEED) contract to Wood for its liquefied natural gas (LNG) platform development in the West Delta area of the Gulf of Mexico. Esvagt Deepens Relationship with Hess
Purpose built ESVAGT vessel to perform additional tasks for Hess at the South Arne field. ESVAGT and Hess, who have collaborated at the South Arne field for 17 years, have agreed to extend their relationship for an additional twelve years. ESVAGT has supplied Hess with supply and standby vessels for the South Arne platform, as well as connecting tank vessels to Hess’ production tanks. The new contract will expand the scope of work to include service, maintenance and inspection of the hose system and to perform service vessel duties in connection with work on Hess’ unmanned platforms.
Ulstein Group Records Operating Loss of $11.5M
In 2015, Ulstein Group recorded revenues of $279.4 million and an operating loss of $11.5 million. The business areas Design & Solutions and Power & Control both recorded profits. The downturn in the offshore sector and a tricky market has to be met with adaptation and innovation, according to CEO Gunvor Ulstein. ‘These are tough times. The group’s results for 2015 were weak as a result of lower utilization of capacity and the generally challenging market situation in our business areas. We believe 2016 will also be a challenging year.

South Wales maritime engineering company Mustang Marine has rebranded as Mainstay Marine Solutions. The Pembroke Dock based workboat, marine energy device and waterside infrastructure specialist has adopted a new name and corporate image following its first year under new ownership. ULSTEIN Reports ‘Good Results’ for 2014
Ulstein Group said it achieved a “good result” for 2014, with an operating turnover of NOK 2.7 billion compared to 2013’s NOK 2.3 billion. Meanwhile, the group’s operating profit of NOK 184.1 million comes in under the NOK 317.8 million operating profit for 2013, while the 2014 operating result before tax of NOK 167.7 million is again lower than NOK 360.8 million for 2013. “We are pleased with last year’s figures. Today’s market is tough, and we are preparing for even harder times to come. There will be major demand for restructuring and change,” said CEO Gunvor Ulstein.

Steel Cutting Ceremony for Otto Offshore Newbuild
On Friday 6 February 2015, Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd., China, held a steel cutting ceremony for the first of four platform supply vessels of ULSTEIN’s PX121 design being built for Otto Offshore Limited. The shipbuilding contracts at Wuchang were announced in August 2014. Ulstein Design & Solutions is contracted on the delivery of ship design & equipment to four PX121 type platform supply vessels. The contract includes the deliveries of design, engineering and main equipment.
