COSCO: 10 Vessels with Hans Jensen Lubrication System

One of the world’s biggest shipping companies, China COSCO Shipping Group, has placed an order for 10 large ore carriers from China State Shipbuilding Corporation. COSCO specified the order to include the cylinder lubrication system ‘HJ Lubtronic SIP’ from Hans Jensen Lubricators A/S, as it enables large cost savings through reduced cylinder oil consumption, and reduced wear on cylinder liners and piston rings. The first vessel is scheduled for delivery in January 2018. Today’s energy efficient diesel engines for marine vessels are designed to reduce environmental footprints and fuel costs.

Maersk Fluid Technology Sees SEA-Mate Order Influx

Maersk Fluid Technology (MFT) has reported a recent influx of orders for its SEA-Mate Blending-on-Board (BOB) system as confirmation of industry demand for technological solutions that enable ship operators to blend fit-for-purpose cylinder lubricant compositions on board their vessels that match actual engine operating conditions and fuel sulphur levels. The use of this type of technology can reduce cylinder oil consumption and alleviate issues such as cold corrosion and excessive cylinder wear, according to MFT.

Breaking Down IMO’s 0.5% Bunker Sulfur Cap

Breaking down the challenges of the 2020 sulfur cap can be confusing. Matti Bargfried provides a primer. What has happened so far? The IMO this October voted in its 70th session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee to globally cap the maximum amount of sulfur allowed to 0.5 percent. HFO will be further allowed (there is no mandate to disallow usage) provided it meets the set standards. Alternative measurements like scrubbers are also accepted to reduce the ship emissions.

Big Win for Maersk Fluid Technology’s BOB System

In the second half of 2015, Maersk Fluid Technology introduced a new version of its cylinder oil ‘Blending-On-Board’ (BOB) system, targeting medium-sized 2-stroke propulsion engines with a cylinder bore between 420 and 680 mm. Now the first volume order has been placed for retrofit of the SEA-Mate B1000 system onto 12 tankers delivered to Maersk Tankers between 2005 and 2008 – ten vessels equipped with Wärtsilä (WinGD) RTA and RT-Flex engines with a bore between 580 and 620 mm and two vessels with engines designed by MAN Diesel & Turbo.

ExxonMobil: 5 Tips on Switching Fuels in ECAs

ExxonMobil has compiled five ‘top-tips’ to help vessel operators effectively switch fuels when entering and exiting Emission Control Areas (ECAs) without introducing maintenance issues. ExxonMobil highlights that switching fuels at correct time is key to meeting 0.10% sulphur requirement. Typically, inadequate management of the fuel switchover process can increase the risk of thermal shock to engine components, which can result in fuel pump seizures and engine shutdowns. 1.Have a clear switchover procedure – It is important to ensure that the crew is familiar with the process.

Maersk to Address ‘Blending-On-Board’

Visitors to the 2016 European Marine Engineering Conference in Amsterdam this year will be able to hear a keynote speech from Maersk Fluid Technology managing director Jens Byrgesen, who will talk about his company’s success with “Blending-On-Board” lubrication technology. Maersk’ SEA-Mate Blending-On-Board concept is based on proprietary technology designed to enable the operator to custom blend a fit-for-purpose cylinder lubricant from recycled two-stroke system oil and a cylinder oil concentrate with a base-number up above 300 BN.

Maersk's Blend-on-Board Project to Market Soon

The Danish shipping giant Maersk has decided to commercialise its new tech invention -  SEA-Mate Blend-on-Board - developed by the subsidiary Maersk Fluid Technologies (MFT), says Denmark's post. The new technology recycles motor oil and has saved Maersk 110 million kroner every year in operating costs since its inception. "By recycling the lubricating oil and blending cylinder oil on-board the vessels, we secure large savings for 2-stroke engines in the container, tanker and bulk market. Our expectations are high for the marine market," says a statement from the company.

Lukoil Supplies Lubricants for MSC Oscar

With the launch of MSC Oscar, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) sets a new record in terms of TEU capacity; at 19,224 TEU, the vessel is largest containership ever built.The ship was officially inaugurated at the Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) Shipyard in South Korea on January 8, 2015 and will service trade routes between Asia and Europe. According to Lukoil Marine, who supplies lubricants to more than 100 vessels in the MSC fleet, MSC Oscar’s size isn’t its only impressive aspect.

LR Addresses Fuel Changes when Entering and Exiting ECAs

From January 1, 2015, the maximum sulphur content of fuel oil used within the MARPOL Annex VI Emission Control Areas (ECAs) will be 0.10%, unless using an approved alternative means for controlling sulphur emissions. In most cases, the fuel used will be low-sulphur distillate oil (LSDO). Many ships operating both inside and outside ECAs will changeover between LSDO and residual fuel oil (RFO) when entering and exiting ECAs. Castrol, MAN, Sing Off Same Lube Oil Song-sheet

MAN Diesel & Turbo supports Castrol’s advice that misapplication of mid-range base number (BN) cylinder oils can cause corrosion. Castrol inform that the engine manufacturer recently issued service letters that recommend “cylinder lube oil with 70BN or higher” for latest generation super long stroke engines using higher sulphur fuel (above 1.5%-2%). MAN says it “cannot recommend” cylinder oils “with a BN level between 50 and 60” for these engines. Ship-owners have been persuaded…

ExxonMobil Expands MobilGard Supply in Shanghai

ExxonMobil Marine Lubricants completed the first bulk delivery of Mobilgard 570 cylinder oil in the Port of Shanghai in May. The bulk delivery of Mobilgard 570 was made by Hai Gong You 30, the first double-hulled marine lubricants-delivery barge to operate in Shanghai. Built and owned by China Marine Bunker PetroChina Co. Ltd (Chimbusco), the IMO-compliant barge is 278 deadweight tonnes. It is equipped with state-of-the-art flow meter technology and a 1.5 metric ton crane to ensure accurate and efficient deliveries. The barge is on charter to ExxonMobil for two years.
