Hapag-Lloyd Profit Doubles

Container Shipping Bankruptcy Lends Insight on Potential Fallout from Trade War

Global trade tensions have captured headlines in recent months, as the imposition of a series of tariffs and counter-tariffs by various global trade counterparts has raised questions about the possibility of a trade war. Such development could potentially have an impact on global trade flows, and, consequently, the companies which facilitate international movement of goods.Though the situation is still developing and the final impact is uncertain, Gregory Draco, the Chief U.S. Economist at Oxford, predicted in July that the tariffs would create an 0.1 percent to 0.2 percent drag on U.S. GDP.

Hapag-Lloyd Slashes 2018 Profit Outlook

German container carrier Hapag-Lloyd has cut its profit outlook for the year 2018 amid a challenging and volatile environment for ocean carriers. A Reuters report quoted the shipper saying that freight rates had recovered more slowly than expected while fuel and charter costs had ballooned. The report said that these developments cannot be fully offset by cost saving measures that have already been initiated. Hapag-Lloyd also referred to the uncertainty regarding the development of freight rates in the upcoming peak season as one of the factors for the outlook revision.

The government of South Korea decided to invest 1.35 trillion won (USD 1.2 billion) in Korea Ocean Business Corporation (KOBC). GAC Australia Wins ONE Deal

Global container shipping company Ocean Network Express (ONE) has awarded GAC the agency contract to handle all its vessel calls in Australia covering the ports of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Fremantle. Under the agreement, GAC Australia will provide agency and husbandry services for approximately 210 calls annually.ONE is a joint venture formed by the integration of three major shipping lines in Japan – Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Mitsui OSK Lines and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha – and is now the world’s sixth-largest container carrier.

Euroseas Completes EuroDry Spinoff

Euroseas announced  that it has completed the spin-off of its drybulk fleet into EuroDry Ltd. Euroseas shareholders received one EuroDry Ltd share for every five shares of the Company they owned. Hapag-Lloyd Ships Gain MacGregor Cargo Boosts

MacGregor, part of Cargotec, is upgrading and optimising the container stowage systems on board seven Hapag-Lloyd C-class (Samsung 9,300 TEU series) container vessels. A contract for four vessels was signed in December 2017 and was shortly followed by a further three in January 2018. Euroseas Announces Time Charter Contracts

Euroseas Sells its Oldest Bulk Carrier Vessel

Greece-based Euroseas announced the sale of M/V Monica P, a 46,667 dwt vessel, built in 1998, to unaffiliated third party for the gross amount of $6.45 million. The owner and operator of drybulk and container carrier vessels and provider of seaborne transportation for drybulk and containerized cargoes said that the vessel will be delivered to its buyers by June 30 2018. The Company has a fleet of 17 vessels, including 3 Panamax drybulk carriers, 1 Handymax drybulk carrier, 1 Kamsarmax drybulk carrier, 1 Ultramax drybulk carrier, 10 Feeder containerships and an intermediate containership.

Euroseas Bags TC for Newbuilding Kamsarmax M/V Ekaterini

Euroseas, an owner and operator of drybulk and container carrier vessels and provider of seaborne transportation for drybulk and containerized cargoes, announced that a subsidiary of the Company has entered into a time charter contract for its newbuilding vessel, M/V Ekaterini, an 82,000 dwt, 2018 built Kamsarmax bulk carrier. Specifically, M/V Ekaterini, which is scheduled to be delivered to the Company from the shipyard on May 7, 2018, has been chartered to a highly reputable European charterer for about two years at a gross daily rate of $13,000.
