New Guidance Issues on Bulk Carrier Ventilation

Proper ventilation is essential to preventing damage to the cargo and to ensure the safety of the crew and vessel in bulk carriers. Brazos Pilots to Christen New Pilot Boat

Brazos Pilot Association President Captain Billy Burns said its newest boat, Brazos Pilot, is a vessel tailored to fit the job and provide the pilot association with performance dependability and the safety systems integration to fulfill their maritime mission.The 64 x 19-ft. Breaking Down IMO’s 0.5% Bunker Sulfur Cap

Breaking down the challenges of the 2020 sulfur cap can be confusing. Matti Bargfried provides a primer. What has happened so far? The IMO this October voted in its 70th session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee to globally cap the maximum amount of sulfur allowed to 0.5 percent. HFO will be further allowed (there is no mandate to disallow usage) provided it meets the set standards. Alternative measurements like scrubbers are also accepted to reduce the ship emissions.

North P&I Club Supports Member in Overturning Cargo Carriage Judgement

North P&I Club has helped restore the commercial balance between shipowners and cargo interests by successfully supporting a Member in its appeal against a UK High Court decision (10 November 2016). The Court of Appeal overturned the March 5, 2015 decision in Volcafe Ltd and others v. CSAV, which has been viewed by the shipping community as widely detrimental to shipowners. Chilean shipowner CSAV carried bagged coffee in 17 non-ventilated containers between Columbia and Germany in 2012.

Beginning May 26th, Alaska’s newest passenger ferry will commence service between the popular end-of-the-road destination of Homer and the secluded village of Seldovia, located on a roadless area of Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula. “Often when people hear the word ‘ferry’ they think basic transportation,” said Sarah Richardson, Director of Public Relations for the Seldovia Village Tribe, the owners of the new vessel. “Our service operates in spectacular Kachemak Bay, so we wanted to offer an experience that would be unique and memorable.
