New Agreement on Minimum Wage for Seafarers

The social partners, namely the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) and the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), convened in Geneva at the Joint Maritime Commission (JMC) subcommittee on seafarers wages to review the International Labor Organization (ILO) Minimum Wage for an Able Seafarer (AB) provided for in Code B of the Maritime Labor Convention, 2006 (as amended).The decision, following two days of negotiations, was to update the minimum wage for an able seafarer by $27 over the next three years.

Is OCEMA’s Terminal Weighing Approach SOLAS VGM Compliant?

The Ocean Carrier Equipment Management Association recently declared the Terminal Weighing Approach (TWA) an industry best practice. The lack of guidelines for shippers about how to comply with the SOLAS Verified Gross Mass (VGM) regulation that went into effect on July 1, 2016, has also led to a number of questions throughout the industry. Where should containers be weighed? How do shippers provide their signatures for these weights without slowing down the supply chain? Still, as of today, many of the 170 countries that have adopted the regulation have not published guidelines.

IMRF: People in Distress Should be Rescued by All Vessels

Recent reports that some would-be rescuers do not fully understand the legal context of rescue at sea, and may have been deterred from helping people in distress because of possible legal action by local authorities seeking to counter trafficking activity are misplaced, according to the International Maritime Rescue Federation (IMRF). Shippers’ Confidence Dips Slightly -Moore Stephens

Overall confidence levels in the shipping industry fell in the three months to November 2015, according to the latest Shipping Confidence Survey from international accountant and shipping adviser Moore Stephens. The average confidence level expressed by respondents in the markets in which they operate was 5.6 on a scale of 1 (low) to 10 (high). This compares to the 5.9 recorded in August 2015. The survey was launched in May 2008 with a confidence rating of 6.8. All main categories of respondent recorded a fall in confidence this time, most notably charterers (down from 6.5 to 5.5).

Legislation to Keep USMMA Open During Government Shutdown

With only five legislative days left to avoid a government shutdown, Congressman Steve Israel (NY-03) announced legislation that will ensure United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) midshipmen can continue attending classes in the event of a shutdown. The Midshipmen Education Certainty Act would automatically appropriate funding to USMMA for the duration of a government shutdown. ABS CEO Lays Out Vision for Technical Leadership at CMA Shipping

During the recent CMA Shipping 2015 conference in Stamford, Connecticut, ABS Chairman and CEO Christopher J. Wiernicki provided the conference's keynote address to set the agenda for discussion over the following two days. CMA Shipping is an annual meeting of nearly 1,300 leaders of the maritime industry from around the world, the largest gathering of maritime executives in North America. Wiernicki gave the attendees plenty to consider as he laid out his vision for how the maritime industry must embrace a new generation of technical leadership.
