Port of Kiel: Passenger Volume Up, Cargo Down
More than 2.2 million passengers and again over 7 million cargo tons handledKiel continues to pursue its growth course in passenger traffic posting a 4.2 % increase with 2.2 million travelers. At the same time, the port’s cargo sector was unable to match the top results of the reference period (2017: 7.4 million tons, +14.3 %). The handling performance decreased by 3.5 % to 7.15 tons of cargo in 2018. In order to further improve the port’s infrastructure, investment activities have accelerated once again.
Color Line Expands Oslo-Kiel Freight Route
The Norwegian shipping company Color Line said that its newly purchased ro-ro ship M/S Color Carrier sailed for the first time from Hjortneskaia in Oslo to Kiel in Germany.Color Line can transport approx. 80,000 trailers annually on this stretch. This corresponds to a continuous string of trailers from Oslo to Tromsø in the far north of Norway."This initiative is an important contribution to strengthening the environmentally friendly sea route that represents a collective solution for the transport of goods," said CEO Trond Kleivdal.
Color Line Expands Kiel – Oslo Cargo Capacity
The Norwegian shipping company Color Line operates the additional freight ferry “Color Carrier“ on the route Kiel – Oslo as of January 11th to increase its freight-carrying capability.On the occasion of its inaugural call, the Lord Mayor of Kiel, Dr Ulf Kämpfer, PORT OF KIEL Managing Director Dr Dirk Claus and the Executive Manager of Sartori & Berger, Jens Broder Knudsen, welcomed the captain of the “Color Carrier”, Nils Sivertsen”, to the capital city of Schleswig-Holstein and handed over the traditional inaugural plaques during the onboard reception.
Ulstein Verft to Finalise Color Hybrid
The hull of the 'Color Hybrid', European cruiseferry line Color Line's next flag ship that will be servicing Sandefjord-Strömstad, has arrived Ulstein Verft for completion.The ship is contracted by Color Line at Ulstein Verft and is scheduled for delivery Q2 2019, said a press release from the largest cruiseferry line operating on routes to and from Norway.The ship presents an increased capacity on the line between Norway and Sweden. The 'Color Hybrid' is the world’s largest plug-in hybrid ship, measuring 160 metres in length, and with a capacity of 2,000 passengers and about 500 cars.

Kiel posted record cargo and passenger handling figures in 2016. For the first time some 6.5 million tons were loaded or unloaded last year - an increase of 5.3 % over the previous year and the port’s best-ever result so far.
