Hurricane Michael, the third most powerful storm ever to strike the U.S. mainland, headed northeast on Thursday, weakened but still set to soak Georgia and the Carolinas after devastating the Florida Panhandle.By 6 AM on Thursday, heavy rain and wind had reached as far north as Charlotte, North Carolina and the Western North Carolina mountains. Florence Makes Landfall near Wrightsville Beach, NC

The U.S. National Hurricane Canter is reporting that Hurricane Florence has made landfall near Wrightsville Beach North Carolina.Widespread flooding is being reported along a wide swath of the North Carolina coastline. The storm, moving west at 6 miles per hour, is now forecasted to stall onshore for several days, dumping as much as 40 inches of rain in some areas. "Catastrophic" flooding is expected over portions of the Carolinas.As forecasters predict a "life threatening" storm surge of 9 to 13 feet, at least 150 people are awaiting rescue in New Bern, N.C.

Navy, Coast Guard Assets Repositioned as Florence Threatens

Florence Compared to North Carolina's Worst Storm Ever

As Florence bears down on the North Carolina coastline, the Category 4 storm is being compared to the worst storm ever to hit the Tarheel State - Hurricane Hazel, occurring back in 1954.Hurricane Florence, packing winds of more than 130 mph. Hazel, in comparison, brought winds of 150 mph, causing 19 deaths and destroyed thousands of buildings as it bulled its way inland.As many as 1.5 million residents have been told to evacuate coastal and low lying areas in South Carolina and North Carolina.

In Blizzard's Wake, Northeastern US Brace for Intense Cold

Street crews in the U.S. Northeast raced through the night into Friday to clear snow-clogged streets after a powerful blizzard and restore power to homes ahead of a brutal cold spell that has killed more than a dozen people. Design Contract Awarded for SC Container Terminal

AECOM said it has been chosen by the South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) to provide detailed design services for the new Hugh K. Leatherman, Sr. Container Terminal at the Port of Charleston. “Extending AECOM’s dedication to delivering a better world and continuing to grow its port presence in the Carolinas, this design work will facilitate development of North America’s newest and most advanced container terminal,” said Tim Keener, executive vice president and general manager of AECOM’s Southeast region.

SC Ports Breaks Ground on Inland Port Dillon

Officials have broken ground on the site of Inland Port Dillon, a South Carolina Ports Authority facility slated to open in early 2018 to support growing intermodal cargo volumes between the Port of Charleston and markets throughout the Carolinas, Northeast and Midwest. "Inland Port Dillon will diversify SCPA's footprint and enable port users to gain logistics efficiencies through rail transportation of their cargo," said Jim Newsome, SCPA president and CEO. "Inland ports provide infrastructure in the interior of the state that supports the movement of freight to and from our marine terminals.

New Inland Port Planned in South Carolina

Plans to develop South Carolina’s second inland port in Dillon were announced by the South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) in a move that aims to support growth of intermodal container volumes and expand access to markets in neighboring states and throughout the Northeast and Midwest, according to the SCPA. A resolution authorizing the port to move forward with construction of the terminal in the Carolinas I-95 Mega Site was unanimously approved by the SCPA Board of Directors.

Invasive Species: Asian Tiger Shrimp Causing Concerns

Rise in Asian Tiger Shrimp sightings prompts scientific look at invasion concerns. The recent rise in sightings of non-native Asian tiger shrimp off the U.S. Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coasts has government scientists working to determine the cause of the increase and the possible consequences for native fish and seafood in those waters. Researchers from the U.S. Geological Survey and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration are working with state agencies from North Carolina to Texas to look into how this transplanted species from Indo-Pacific, Asian and Australian waters reached U.S.

Atlas Copco Taps James River Equipment

Atlas Copco welcomes its newest drilling equipment distributor, James River Equipment. The company, well-known as a heavy equipment supplier, will represent Atlas Copco in the Carolinas for blasthole rigs, other surface drilling rigs and equipment, and Secoroc rock drilling tools. In North Carolina, James River Equipment will also distribute Atlas Copco’s Dynapac compaction and paving equipment. Equipment covered by this new relationship includes surface crawlers such as Atlas Copco’s SmartROC, FlexiROC, and PowerROC surface rigs, the ROC L8 and the SmartRig F9C.

Offshore Wind Demo Project

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) issued a notice stating that it intends to prepare a draft environmental impact statement for the proposed Duke Energy Carolinas, LLC Offshore Wind Demonstration Project for construction of up to three power generating wind turbines within Pamlico Sound, Dare County, North Carolina.
