Stena Livia Joins the Baltic Sea Fleet

The 186-meter Visentini RoPax vessel Stena Livia will initially join sister vessel Stena Flavia on the Nynäshamn-Ventspils route from mid-April, Stena Line announced. Later this year the pair will replace the existing tonnage on the ferry route between Travemünde and Liepaja, adding 40% freight capacity and shorten the crossing time substantially.During 2021 Stena Line is expanding its Baltic Sea operations with modern and large RoPax vessels being added to the two ferry routes from Latvia to Sweden and Germany.

Ship Tech: GHG Emission Reduction focus of NYK LNG-Fueled PCTC Newbuilds

NYK has concluded a shipbuilding contract with China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Nanjing) Co. Ltd. for four LNG-fueled PCTCs to be delivered from 2022 to 2023, intended to transport vehicles mainly to/from Europe and/or to the Middle East.The ships are designed with GHG emission reduction, and to that end they will be outfieed with WinGD’s X-DF2.0 iCER main engine, the first time they will be utilized in the world. According to NYK, the engine consumes less gas and reduces GHG by cutting methane emissions from exhaust gas by approximately 50%.

MOL in conjunction with Osaka University has developed a mathematical algorithm to optimize the loading of cars onto ferries.

DFDS, Moby in Ferry Swap Deal

Copenhagen headquartered ferry and logistics company DFDS has reached an agreement with the Italian ferry company Moby to acquire its the two combined freight and passenger ferries (RoPax).The Danish company decided to purchase the ships, the 2001-built Moby Wonder and the 2005-built Moby Aki, in order to expand capacity on the Amsterdam-Newcastle route.Moby will in turn acquire the two passenger ferries currently operating on Amsterdam-Newcastle — King Seaways and Princess Seaways, built in 1987 and 1986, respectively.“The new ferries are ideally suited for our Amsterdam-Newcastle route.

First MOL Car Carrier Vessel Arrives in Cambodia

The 6,400 standard passenger car capacity, Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL)-operated car carrier Grand Orion has made a first call for such a vessel type in Cambodia.The Japanese shipping company said in a release that the car carrier called at the Port of Sihanoukville, Cambodia, and discharged about 12,000 tons of construction machinery. Shipbuilding: New 110m Catamaran Named Saint John Paul II

Shipbuilder Incat has launched the 110m vehicle / passenger ferry from the shipyard at Derwent Park in Hobart Tasmania. The ship will commence sea trials in mid January prior to delivery to her new owner Virtu Ferries for service between Malta and Sicily.Bearing the livery Saint John Paul II the vessel has been named in honor of the Pope who served from 1978 to 2005, so revered the Pope has often posthumously, but unofficially, been referred to by Catholics as "St. John Paul the Great".

Norwegian Car Carriers to Buy Two from Hyundai Samho

Oslo-listed Norwegian Car Carriers (NOCC) has signed a contract with Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries for the construction of two 6500 ceu Pure Car Truck Carrier (OCTCs). Delivery from the South Korean shipyard is scheduled for between the fourth quarter 2016 and first quarter 2017, and there is an option included for two additional vessels. NOCC’s strategy is to grow its business as a tonnage provider serving the global car carrier operators, says a company statement. The company currently has 10 car carriers in its fleet ranging between 4,000-7,000 ceu.

BC Ferries Order WESMAR Thruster

WESMAR to supply BC Ferries, with a  dual prop, counter-rotating, bow thruster for the  T-Class Passenger/Car ferry 'M/V Tachek'. M/V Tachek transports cars and passengers among the popular Gulf Islands and the WESMAR Model V2-24, 150 HP AC system will enhance the 162-foot ferry’s maneuvering and docking capabilities, in the waters off Vancouver Island, where the growing traffic of pleasure and commercial vessels crowd the waters, particularly during tourist season. The M/V Tachek,  built in 1969, is undergoing an upgrade project estimated to extend her operating life  and save fuel.

ACL's New CONRO's to be Built to UK Standards

Atlantic Container Line (ACL) confirm that their five new roll-on roll-off containerships (CONROs) will be built to UK standards. The five new vessels are being built at the Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co. Ltd in Shanghai China. They are the first of their type ever built with a container capacity of 3800 TEUs plus 28,900 square metres of Ro-Ro space and a car capacity of 1,307 vehicles. All five vessels will be delivered in 2015 and will replace the companys existing transatlantic fleet of five vessels.

China Shipyard Gets Five ACL CONRO Orders

Atlantic Container Line (ACL) contracts Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding to build world's largest largest RORO/Containerships (CONRO's). The G4 (Generation 4) vessels will replace ACL's existing fleet of G3 CONROs operating in the company's transatlantic service. All five vessels will be delivered in 2015. The new vessels will be the first of their type ever built. They will be bigger, faster, greener and more efficient than their predecessors. The G4's will have a container capacity of 3800 TEUs plus 28,900 square meters of RORO space, with a car capacity of 1307 vehicles.

Car Carrier Long-term Charters by Höegh Autoliners

Höegh Autoliners enters into 12 year bare boat charters for two 6, 500 car capacity Pure Car Truck Carriers (PCTC) to be delivered by DSME in 2014. The vessels will be owned by Ocean Yield AS and will be built by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering's (DSME) shipyard in Mangalia, Romania. Höegh Autoliners has previously taken delivery of a series of 10 PCTCs from DSME and the two 6 500 car capacity vessels will be built based on the same specifications with relevant updates.

Propeller Retrofit Gives Significant Fuel Savings

An optimized propeller from MAN Diesel has helped the Scandlines passenger ferry, the M/V Sassnitz, achieve increased efficiency of 12% on its daily sail between Trelleborg, Sweden and Sassnitz, Germany. Scandlines is one of Europe’s largest ferry companies, a result of the fusion between the largest, national ferry lines in Denmark and Germany. Business is based on the swift and reliable transport of both passengers and cargo on international routes within Danish, German and Swedish waters, as well as further afield to the Baltic states and Finland.
