The Panama Canal Board of Directors announced the appointment of Ricaurte Vasquez as the next Panama Canal Administrator.According to a press note from the artificial 82 km waterway in Panama that connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean, Vasquez will take office on September 4, 2019, succeeding current Administrator Jorge L. Panama Canal Expansion Marks Second Anniversary

Today marks Panama Canal's two-year anniversary of the inauguration of its Canal Expansion. It is the largest enhancement project in the waterway’s 103-year history. To date, the Canal has transited 3,745 Neopanamax vessels. The performance of the Expanded Canal’s Neopanamax Locks continues to exceed expectations. The transit of the Canal’s largest cruise ship to date, the Norwegian Bliss, weighing more than 168,000 gross tons and carrying nearly 5,000 passengers. Recording year-on-year growth, in terms of number of transits and total cargo volumes.

Panama Canal Expansion Boosts US East Coast Port Volumes

As the Panama Canal’s newly operational expanded lane helps set monthly tonnage records, the project’s impacts are being felt along the U.S. East Coast. Effects of the canal’s expansion are reverberating well-beyond Panama’s shores, as ports around the world are in varying stages of work to deepen and widen their channels to accommodate the growing number of Neopanamax vessels that can now transit the canal. Now nearly one year on from the first vessel transit through the expanded waterway, many ports are benefitting, particularly those along the U.S. East Coast.

Seattle-based naval architecture and marine engineering consultancy Glosten has promoted Ken FitzGerald to Principal. FitzGerald is a graduate of Louisiana State University (BS, Petroleum Engineering, 1992), and joined Glosten in 2003 after 13 years working in commercial oceanography. While at Glosten, he has supported the firm’s work in mooring design, geophysical surveys, research vessels, logistics planning, and has managed risk assessment workgroups. He is a subject matter expert in mooring and maneuvering, and has managed ship alteration projects of all types.

Wilhelmsen Ships Service (WSS) is moving to ensure that its customers’ vessels pass through the new Panama and Suez Canals with the optimum efficiency, speed and safety thanks to a fresh Ships Agency ‘canal transit’ solution. Panama Canal, PortMiami Renew MOU as Port Welcomes MOL Majesty

Kuryla renewed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to promote trade opportunities and share best customer practices. Port of Barcelona Looks to Panama, Cuba for Growth

Panama and Cuba, both in the midst of growth and international expansion, are examples of two different economic models that are helping to attract foreign companies through government initiatives providing investor security. WSS Establishes Suez Canal Transit Team

Wilhelmsen Ships Service (WSS) has established a dedicated local transit team to help its customers negotiate not just the Suez Canal, but also the complex rebate system designed to boost traffic through the recently expanded waterway. The new office, based in Alexandria, is staffed 24/7 by local agents who intimately understand both customer requirements and the workings of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA). The canal expansion opened in August last year, cutting vessel waiting time from 11 to 3 hours and potentially doubling the number of daily transits.

Caribbean’s Largest Mobile Harbor Crane Delivered

Liebherr Maritime Crane has delivered the largest mobile harbor crane of the Caribbean to Kingston Wharves Limited in Jamaica. The LHM 600 is equipped with an elongated tower extension and eases the handling of big container vessels up to Super-Post-Panamax size. Panama Canal Authority, Peel Ports Form Alliance

The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with major UK ports operator, Peel Ports, who own the Port of Liverpool, as the latter gears up for the formal opening of its Liverpool2 container terminal in early November. The formal agreement creates a strategic alliance aimed at facilitating international trade and generating new business by promoting trade routes between Liverpool and the west coast of South America via the Panama Canal.
