India Approves Major Port Authorities Bill
The government of India has approved a draft bill to empower 12 major ports in India by providing them full autonomy in decision-making for greater efficiency. According to Union Minister of State for Shipping Mansukh Lal Mandaviya, the Major Port Authorities Bill, 2016 once enacted, would replace the Major Port Trusts Act, 1963. Alumni Form Committee on USMMA Accreditation Status
The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Alumni Association and Foundation (AAF) has formed an advisory committee composed of Kings Point graduates and education experts to assist the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) and the Academy in protecting and preserving the school’s imperiled accreditation. In June 2016, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) reported that the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) underperformed in five of 14 areas including planning, leadership and governance, administrative staff qualifications, resource allocation and student services.
Webb Awards Thomas B. Crowley Sr. Memorial Scholarship
Hannah Wistort, Webb Institute class of 2017, is the 2016-2017 recipient of Crowley Maritime Corporation’s Thomas B. Crowley Sr. Memorial Scholarship. Webb’s scholarship selection committee chose Wistort for her academic excellence and leadership skills. Wistort, who is from Niskayuna, N.Y., has been involved with many student organizations and community projects. She is a member of the Webb Leadership Committee, which organizes community service and outreach projects for students.
Wiernicki Receives Admiral of the Ocean Seas Award
ABS Chairman, President and CEO, Christopher J. Wiernicki, was honored for his contributions to the maritime industry by the United Seamen’s Service (USS) as a recipient of the Admiral of the Ocean Seas Award on October 28, 2016 in New York. “I am humbled to accept this award, not for me, but rather on behalf of the more than 5,000 worldwide employees of ABS and the 1.5 million mariners who day in and day out keep this industry moving and our global economy expanding,” Wiernicki said. The award is conferred on those who have made noteworthy contributions to the maritime industry.
Lloyd to Lead The Nautical Institute
The Nautical Institute has selected a new chief executive officer after interviewing a competitive shortlist of six candidates. Captain John Lloyd MBA AFNI, currently the Institute’s chief operating officer, will take over from Philip Wake OBE RD MSc FNI, who will retire in May 2017 after 14 years in post. Lloyd took up the COO post in November 2015 in which he has had overall responsibility for the institute’s specialized training services, including the industry-standard dynamic positioning operator (DPO) accreditation and certification scheme.

First Class Cadet Jacquelyn Kubicko has received a 2016-2017 Fulbright U.S. Student Award to study in the United Kingdom, where she will represent the U.S. and the Coast Guard Academy as a cultural ambassador while pursuing a Master of Research at the University of Southampton, U.K. As a Fulbright scholar, Kubicko will enhance mutual understanding between Americans and people in the U.K. and join over 100,000 Fulbright U.S. Student Program alumni who have undertaken grants since the program began in 1948.

The State University of New York Maritime College will confer the honorary degree of doctor of science degree on Morton S. Leadership Changes at Huntington Ingalls Industries
U.S. shipbuilder Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) announced today a number of changes across its leadership team. HII’s Board of Directors has elected Christopher D. Kastner to succeed Barbara A. Niland as the company’s chief financial officer and corporate vice president, business management, effective with Niland’s retirement on March 1, 2016.
