SMM Launches with High-Profile Guest Speakers

At today’s opening press conference of the international maritime trade fair in Hamburg, political and business leaders discussed current challenges facing the shipping industry. The focus of the debate was on the 0.5 percent sulphur limit for ship fuels which will take effect on January 1,  2020, and the industry's goal to cut greenhouse gas emissions from global shipping in half by the year 2050. Roughly 2,300 exhibitors and the extensive conference program accompanying the trade fair will deliver answers to the industry's complex questions. Roughly 50,000 visitors are expected to attend.

Wärtsilä to Equip US LNG Fueling Barge

Wärtsilä said it will provide a broad scope of products and solutions for a new articulated tug barge (ATB) that will be used to supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel to cruise ships along the east coast of Florida, U.S. The 4,000 m3 capacity ATB is being built at the VT Halter Marine (VTHM) shipyard in Pascagoula, Miss. on behalf of Quality Liquefied Natural Gas Transport LLC (Q-LNG). When delivered, the vessel will be on a long-term charter with Shell Oil Co. The barge will be fitted with a Wärtsilä LNG cargo storage, handling and control system.

Smart Ships: Inmarsat, Samsung Heavy Industries Partner

Satellite communications services provider Inmarsat said it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI), establishing a relationship to leverage the ‘smart ship’ connectivity offered by Fleet Xpress at the vessel construction stage. The agreement envisages the South Korean yard installing Inmarsat-approved terminal hardware and offering applications to cover remote machinery diagnostics and CCTV services, to leverage the satellite communications platform’s capabilities from the moment the ship is delivered.

Dry Bulk Shipping Demand to Continue: Drewry

Drewry expects that dry bulk shipping charter rates will continue to recover with firm demand and controlled fleet growth, according to the latest edition of the Dry Bulk Forecaster, published by global shipping consultancy Drewry. Drewry has revised its charter rates forecast in the short term as the date to implement ballast water management systems (BWMS) has been postponed by two years, bringing down the forecast for demolitions that will eventually support fleet growth. Despite the increased fleet supply, charter rates will strengthen because demand will grow faster.

ICS Urges IMO to Set Ballast Water Implementation Dates

The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) has urged the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to back a proposal from a broad coalition of governments concerning the implementation dates for installing new ballast water treatment systems. “If this pragmatic proposal is agreed, this would allow shipping companies to identify and invest in far more robust technology to the benefit of the marine environment,” said ICS Secretary General, Peter Hinchliffe. Wärtsilä BWM Systems for CMA CGM Newbuilds

Four new 3,300 TEU containerships being built for the French shipping group CMA CGM will feature Wärtsilä Ballast Water Management Systems (BWMS). This is the third series of vessels for which the same owner has selected the Wärtsilä BWMS solution, making a total of 10 ships in all. These latest vessels are being built at the Cosco Zhoushan shipyard in China, and the contract with Wärtsilä was signed in the fourth quarter of 2016. The BWMS system chosen for these vessels is a 500m3 per hour capacity Wärtsilä Aquarius UV system.

Market Forces Down Ship Operating Costs

The cost of operating cargo ships has fallen for two successive years but is forecast to rise in 2017 and beyond, according to the latest Ship Operating Costs Annual Review and Forecast 2016/17 report published by global shipping consultancy Drewry. 2016 was another very difficult year for most shipowners and operators. Weak freight rates, declining asset values, eroded profitability and denuded cash balances have forced shipowners to reduce costs wherever possible, and vessel operating expenses have been no exception.

Bimco’s Top Priorities For IMO’s Marine Enviroment Protection

BIMCO has shared the two critical issues at the top of its own priority list ahead of the IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) meeting next week. Information on USCG BWM Regulation

The United States Coast Guard (USCG) has issued the rule with regard to obligation of installation of ballast water management system for the vessels engaged in U.S. waters. The rule is entitled as "Standards for Living Organisms in Ship's Ballast Water Discharged in U.S. Waters", Vol.77, Federal Register Reg.17254, on 23 March 2012 (Please refer to our Technical information TEC No.0903). New vessels (those constructed on or after December 1, 2013) must install by the "first scheduled drydocking" after 1 January 2014 or 1 January 2016 as applicable.

IMO’s MEPC Set to Adopt Polar Code Provisions

The Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) meets for its 68th session from May 11-15, 2015, at IMO Headquarters in London. Items on the agenda include the proposed adoption of the environmental part of the Polar Code and associated draft MARPOL amendments to make the Code mandatory; the implementation of the Ballast Water Management Convention; further work on air pollution and energy efficiency measures; and a proposal to extend the Great Barrier Reef and Torres Strait Particularly Sensitive Sea Area (PSSA) to parts of the Coral Sea.

Wärtsilä Bags BWM Systems Order from Jinhai Shipyard

Wärtsilä Corporation, has received an order for ballast water management systems (BWMS) for three new container ships being built for a major European shipping company at the Jinhai Shipyard in China. The vessels will be fitted with Wärtsilä Aquarius UV systems, with delivery to the first vessel scheduled for the end of 2015, and for the other two ships during 2016. This latest contract follows the order placed last year from the same company, where Wärtsilä BWMS equipment was installed into three 2100 TEU container ships built in Asia, and which were delivered in December 2014.

The 'Cap Ines' will be the first of the Bernhard Schulte fleet to be retrofitted with a Wärtsilä BWMS solution.

Eleven container vessels owned by Bernhard Schulte GmbH & Co. KG, based in Germany, are to be retrofitted with Wärtsilä Aquarius Ballast Water Management Systems (BWMS). This is one of the largest single retrofit contracts thus far issued for BWMS solutions. The contract was signed in July. "This significant order is a clear indication that the major ship owners are actively securing procurement for quality BWMS in anticipation of ratification of the IMO's ballast water treaty.
