The Stellar Daisy, a massive South Korean tanker that sank in March 2017, was spotted on the floor of the South Atlantic Ocean nearly two years later.Exploration company Ocean Infinity said that it has located the wreck of the lost South Korean tanker, Stellar Daisy, at a depth of 3,461 meters in the South Atlantic Ocean, approximately 1,800 nautical miles due west of Cape Town.Stellar Daisy sank on 31 March 2017, transporting iron ore from Brazil to China. Dredging to Boost Opportunities at Port of Setubal

Blue Atlantic Industrial & Logistics Park has welcomed  a ‘transformational’ dredging project which will unleash trade and export opportunities in the Port of Setubal, Portugal.The 96-hectare site is located 40km south of Lisbon in one of Europe’s leading maritime industrial zones. Brazilian Grain Producers Explore Increased Use of Panama Canal

Brazilian farmers in top soy state Mato Grosso signed a memorandum of understanding with the Panama Canal Authority to evaluate ways to cut transportation costs and boost Brazilian grain volumes using the waterway, the authority's chief administrator said. The canal's administration is looking to increase its participation in rising Brazilian grain exports, since a large part of grain trade expansion in Brazil is via new terminals in the northern part of the country, which are closer to the canal.

Panama Canal Sets New Milestone with 3,000th Neopanamax Transit

Panama Canal announced the transit of its 3,000th Neopanamax vessel, exceeding initial traffic expectations by this date and reaffirming the value and impact its route has had on global maritime trade, said a press release on Friday (March 02). The Panamanian flagged containership MSC Caterina completed the milestone transit this morning traveling northbound from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean. The vessel measures 300 meters in length and 48 meters in beam, with a total TEU allowance (TTA) of 9,000 containers. It was one of nine Neopanamax vessels welcomed at the Panama Canal on Friday.

Shipowners' Club on Mayflower Autonomous Ship

The Shipowners' Club has revelead details about Mayflower Autonomous Ship project (MAS), which is an innovative new venture to design, build and sail the world’s first fully autonomous vessel across the Atlantic Ocean. The project’s name commemorates the anniversary of the Pilgrim Father’s voyage from Plymouth, UK to Plymouth in the New World (USA) on the original Mayflower in 1620. To mark the anniversary, marine tech company MSubs, Plymouth University and charitable research foundation Promare, are developing a 21-metre autonomous vessel based on a classic Oyster hull.

2,000th Neopanamax Transits Expanded Panama Canal

Yesterday, the Panama Canal welcomed its 2,000th Neopanamax vessel through the waterway, demonstrating the route’s continued impact on maritime trade and the industry’s confidence in the safe, reliable and efficient service the Canal provides. The COSCO Yantian containership completed the milestone transit through the Expanded Canal traveling northbound from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean. The vessel measures 351 meters in length and 43 meters in beam, with a total TEU allowance (TTA) of 9,504.

Husky Energy Pact for Canadian Offshore Project

NC-Lavalin, Dragados Canada and Pennecon announced that their General Partnership (GP) has been awarded a construction contract from Husky Energy as part of the company's West White Rose Project in Newfoundland and Labrador. The GP will build a concrete gravity structure (CGS) for a fixed drilling platform. The CGS, with an overall height of 145m and base diameter of 122m, will require 76,000m3 of concrete in its construction, which will take place in a purpose built dry dock from 2017 to 2021.

GAC Brazil Opens Office in São Luis

GAC Brazil continues its regional expansion with the opening of a ninth office at São Luis, the capital city of the Brazilian state of Maranhao – making it the first to be located in the northern region of Brazil. Situated on São Marcos Bay, an extension of the Atlantic Ocean, the office will serve two major ports in the area – Ponta da Madeira (PDM) and Porto do Itaqui – as well as Alumar Terminal, which receives a large number of ships per year discharging raw materials used on aluminum production loading alumina in bulk.

Damen Shipyards said it has won an open tender for the supply of a tug to Port Autonome de Papeete on the Pacific island of Tahiti. Tahiti is part of French Polynesia, an overseas territory of the French Republic. Polaris Orders 3 Iron Ore Carriers at Hyundai

South Korean shipping firm Polaris Shipping Co has placed an order with Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) to build three very large iron ore carriers, Yonhap reported. Polaris said the 325,000-ton iron ore carriers will replace some of its aged ships. The financial details of the shipbuilding contract and delivery schedule for the newbuildings were not disclosed. With the latest order from Polaris HHI's orderbook that was valued at $3.8bn in the first five months of 2017 will enlarge further.

Preferred Bidder for Durban Cruise Terminal Named

The plan to position Durban as a world-class cruise capital took a step forward with the announcement of the preferred bidder for the Durban Cruise Terminal – KwaZulu Cruise Terminal Pty Ltd (KCT) – a Joint Venture between MSC Cruises SA (a subsidiary of MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company SA) and Africa Armada Consortium (a black empowerment partner). The bidder will be responsible for the design, financing, construction, operation, maintenance and transfer of a Cruise Terminal Facility for a 25-year concession period in the Port of Durban.

Work Begins on Virginia International Gateway Expansion

Work is underway at Virginia International Gateway (VIG) on a $320 million expansion project that will nearly double the terminal’s annual cargo handling capability. NORDEN, Pinnacle Ink Wood Pellets Transport Deal

Dampskibsselskabet NORDEN A/S has entered into a 9-year contract for the transportation of wood pellets with Canada’s largest manufacturer of wood pellets, Pinnacle Renewable Energy Inc. According to the contract, NORDEN will transport a total of 3.5 million tons of wood pellets from 2018 from Vancouver and Prince Rupert in Western Canada to Europe. The transports will be carried out on Supramax vessels, of which NORDEN is one of the world’s largest operators. There will be 8 trips a year, and each trip is expected to take 65 days.

US Navy Tests Latest Aegis Weapon System

The U.S. Navy conducted a series of cooperative air defense test exercises with the Spanish navy that culminated in live missile firing events using the latest Aegis Weapon System baseline July 20-21. The event was not only the first interoperability test of the latest Aegis Baseline 9.C1 with a foreign ship, but also the first combined Combat Systems Ship Qualification Trial with that country's navy since 2007. Guided-missile destroyer USS Arleigh Burke (DDG 51) and Spanish frigate Cristobol Colon (F 105) participated in the testing.

Emissions Levy Can Cut Ship NOx Emissions by 70% -Study

A levy on nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions with revenues earmarked to fund the uptake of NOx abatement measures is believed to be the most promising tool to reduce these ship emissions by up to 70 percent, as revealed by a new study by environmental consultancy IVL and CE Delft. The study, commissioned by Transport & Environment (T&E), identifies the policy options available at the EU level to regulate ship NOx emissions in the EU seas and compares them with the measures to be taken under the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
