Pella Sietas Wins $111M Icebreaker Deal

Pella Sietas, a shipbuilding company in Neuenfelde, Hamburg, has secured a EUR100 million ($111Mln) order from Russian authorities for a new icebreaker described as the biggest ever built in Germany.The new icebreaker, "Eisbrecher7", with a length of 120m, a width of 27.5m and a draught of 8.5m, is the largest single order in Pella Sieta's company history. The icebreaker is part of the Russian fleet modernization program which, as a special vessel, not only keeps sea routes clear but also provides pilot service for large ships in ice, towing ships and other floating structures.

The Coast Guard needs a ship that can do more than just break ice; it needs a multi-mission ship to provide for the nation’s security, asserting its sovereign rights, and protecting its long-term economic interests. Korea to be Shipbuilding Leader Again: President

President Moon was visiting Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering`s Okpo Shipyard in Geoje, Gyeongsangnam-do Province, to inspect the shipbuilding yard of an icebreaker arctic liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker. “The government will protect and bring up your hope,” he said. The icebreaker LNG carrier the president inspected is equipped with state-of-the-art technology that`s specialized in polar regions. It enables the ship to safely navigate cold weather in temperatures as low as minutes 52 C.

Ice-Breaking LNG Carrier for Yamal LNG Project Named Vladimir Rusanov

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) announced that on December 21, a naming ceremony for an ice-breaking LNG carrier, which was jointly ordered by MOL and China COSCO Shipping Corporation Limited (China COSCO Shipping), was held at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering  (DSME). As a crowd of VIPs and personnel related to the project looked on, the newbuilding vessel was named the "Vladimir Rusanov" by Ms. Veronika Makeeva of PAO Novatek, the major shareholder of the Yamal LNG project. The name is derived from Russian Arctic explorer and geologist.

First of Yamal LNG Tankers Starts Navigation via the NSR

The first Arc7 ice-class LNG tanker “Christophe de Margerie” has entered the Kara Sea and has started its first LNG cargo voyage through the Northern Sea Route (NSR). The subleased tanker will go through the NSR without the escort of icebreakers and will deliver LNG from Norway to South Korea in 15 days. ASCO's New Service to Arctic Ocean

The Russian Arctic Shipping Company (ASCO) operates between the port of Antwerp and the Arctic region of Russia. Its ice-reinforced vessels with a capacity of 7,000 to 12,000 tonnes will mainly carry project cargo. The company operates six vessels, enabling it to offer a monthly rotation. From Antwerp the ships travel via the Baltic (calling at among others St. Petersburg and Ust Luga) and then on the more northerly Russian ports such as Archangel, Sabetta, Murmansk and Nova Zembla. The agent for this service is Seabow, specialising in breakbulk and ro/ro with the emphasis on Russia.

Finland’s Minister Berner Visits NYK

Anne Berner, Finland’s minister of Transport and Communications; government officials; and representatives of 10 Finnish maritime companies — 23 guests in total — visited the NYK head office and met with NYK representative director and executive vice-president corporate officer Naoya Tazawa and senior managing corporate officer Yasuo Tanaka. Earlier in the year on March 10, 2016, the leaders of Japan and Finland issued a joint statement on a strategic partnership between Japan and Finland as gateways in Asia and Europe.

More Chinese Ships to Use Arctic Route

China will send more ships flying its flag to take the Northwest Passage via the Arctic Ocean to cut travel times between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, says the state news agency Xinhua. The world's largest maritime carrier China COSCO Shipping Corporation will send more cargo vessels on Arctic voyages through the Northeast Passage. COSCO's freighter Yongsheng set out Saturday in northern port city of Tianjin for Britain. Hundreds of Scientists Urge Obama to Halt Arctic Oil Drilling

Nearly 400 scientists from more than a dozen countries signed a letter urging U.S. President Barack Obama to take the Arctic Ocean out of the next federal offshore lease sale plan, thus ruling out the possibility of offshore drilling in the Arctic in the near future. Scientists from 13 countries have signed the letter saying global warming will be accelerated by burning oil found in the Arctic Ocean. “No new oil and gas leasing or exploration should be allowed in the Chukchi and Beaufort seas in the foreseeable future,” the scientists said.

RV Polarstern Starts Arctic Season

Scientists from the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) are setting out with the research vessel Polarstern towards Spitsbergen, to use newly developed equipment in the Arctic Ocean. Autonomous instruments on the seabed, in the water column and in the air will complement the long-term measurements of the deep-sea research group. In this way researchers can analyse the climatic changes in the Arctic and their impact on the fauna in the future with higher temporal and spatial resolution.

China Issues Guidance on Arctic Navigation

On April 5, China issued “Guidances on Arctic navigation in the Northwest route 2015”, which provides navigation information services for international navigation ships planned navigating in Arctic waters. The Northwest Passage, a sea route connecting the northern Atlantic and Pacific Oceans through the Arctic Ocean, along the northern coast of North America, is becoming more attractive for shipping as global warming melts the ice cover and keeps the route navigable for longer periods.

China Eyes Faster Arctic Routes Opened by Global Warming

China will encourage ships flying its flag to take the Northwest Passage via the Arctic Ocean, a route opened up by global warming, to cut travel times between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, a state-run newspaper said on Wednesday. China is increasingly active in the polar region, becoming one of the biggest mining investors in Greenland and agreeing to a free trade deal with Iceland. Shorter shipping routes across the Arctic Ocean would save Chinese companies time and money.

First Women's Expedition to the Arctic

Company "MyArctic-expeditions" organize the first women's expedition to the Arctic Ocean. The expedition will start on March 5 in the capital of the Nenets Autonomous Okrug - Naryan-Mar - and will last until 9 March. Participants will travel by snowmobile. Arctic Shipping Routes May Open by 2080 -NOC

Seadrill’s Posts Strong Q4 Results

Rig company Seadrill, once the crown jewel in the business empire of shipping tycoon John Fredriksen, said the final quarter of 2015 was the year’s strongest in operational terms, but warned that 2016 would be tough and said it was working to strengthen its finances. Net income rose 82 percent to $285 million in the fourth quarter, beating the $238 million average estimate in a Bloomberg survey. “During the fourth quarter we experienced our best operational quarter of the year, while continuing to reduce our cost base,” Chief Executive Officer Per Wullf said in a statement.

Shipping Rules to Protect Arctic Ocean

Clear and consistent rules that enhance maritime safety and best preserve what is important to Alaskans will benefit the entire Arctic region now and far into the future, reports ADN. Experts forecast that the volume of cargo coming through that route is likely to increase from 1.36 million tons in 2013 to 4 million tons this year and 65 million tons by 2020. But despite some recent progress, ships are not yet required to follow strong safety and environmental standards in the Arctic.

Obama Defends Arctic Oil Drilling

United States' President Barack Obama defends his decision to allow Royal Dutch Shell to drill for oil in the Arctic Ocean. He insisted that there was no contradiction between his climate change agenda and Arctic drilling. “I share people's concerns about offshore drilling,” Obama said, while emphasizing that Shell bought its exploration leases before he took office. Danish Meet Looks at Arctic Shipping Issues

One of the most significant global issues over the past 10 years is the vast changes in the Arctic region. The world has again turned its attention to the Arctic, this time mainly because of the climate effects in the Arctic, the economic potential of the region, and the geopolitical implications of changes in the Arctic. Plastic Litter Sea Surface, Even in Arctic

In a new study, researchers from the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) show for the first time that marine litter can even be found at the sea surface of Arctic waters. Though it remains unclear how the litter made it so far north, it is likely to pose new problems for local marine life, the authors report on the online portal of the scientific journal Polar Biology. Plastic has already been reported from stomachs of resident seabirds and Greenland sharks.

The principal difficulty for Arctic offshore drilling right now, according to oil industry think tank, is economic. The companies may be back for another try at Arctic offshore drilling, in U.S. waters or elsewhere, if economic conditions change, reports AP. Shell pulled out from drilling in the Arctic after completing just one unsuccessful exploration well. Then Obama administration cancels two scheduled Arctic Ocean lease sales for 2016 and 2017. China Mulls Routine Arctic Transits

China Ocean Shipping (Group) Company (COSCO) plans to launch regular services through the Arctic Ocean to Europe, as global warming makes the route viable and Beijing steps up its northern ambitions, says a report in AFP. Cosco’s Yong Sheng vessel completed its second round trip Arctic voyage between China and Europe in October. It sailed nearly 20,000 nautical miles during the 55-day voyage. The company managers consider the possibilities of normalizing the Arctic shipping route of Yong Sheng, which will decreased the transportation costs and will increase the speed of the loop.

The ice-covered Arctic Ocean is a more important factor concerning the concentration of the greenhouse gas methane in the atmosphere than previously assumed. Experts from the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) report on the newly discovered interactions between the atmosphere, sea ice and the ocean in a recent online study in the journal Nature’s Scientific Reports. Warm Water Mixing up Life in Arctic

The warming of arctic waters in the wake of climate change is likely to produce radical changes in the marine habitats of the High North. This is indicated by data from long-term observations in the Fram Strait, which researchers from the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) have now analysed. Their most important finding: even a short-term influx of warm water into the Arctic Ocean would suffice to fundamentally impact the local symbiotic communities, from the water’s surface down to the deep seas.

Canada and Sweden Cooperate on Arctic Science
