Florida Navy Bases Prepare for Irma
Navy installations throughout Florida are preparing for heavy weather as Hurricane Irma approaches South Florida. Commander, Navy Region Southeast, Rear Adm. Bette Bolivar, directed the evacuation of non-essential personnel and family members from Naval Air Station Key West, Florida, Sept. 5. "Their safety and security is a top priority," Bolivar said. Approximately 50-60 mission essential personnel are remaining behind to maintain essential functions on the installation. Naval Air Station Key West personnel have a designated safe haven area of within 300 miles of Atlanta.

ClassNK Releases Mobile App for PSC Inspection
Classification society ClassNK has released the Arrival Checklist for PSC, the preparatory checklist mobile app for PSC inspections. Arrival Checklist for PSC digitalizes the updated contents of ClassNK’s Port State Inspections Pocket Checklist and is now available for smartphones and tablets. Arrival Checklist for PSC allows users to access the checklist with greater ease and efficiency during preparatory checks of onboard equipment and others prior to arrival into port. The app was developed as a ship management solution to help minimize the risk of PSC detentions and deficiencies.
New Apps Aim to Save Fuel, Accelerate Cargo Flow
The Northwest Seaport Alliance said it is set to launch two new mobile applications in early November aiming to help speed the flow of containers through port facilities and along local freight corridors, reduce idling-related air emissions and save fuel at the Port of Seattle and Port of Tacoma. DrayQ aims to give truck drivers real-time information about wait times in and around marine cargo terminals, and DrayLink will interconnect the drayage community to better dispatch, track and record container moves from pickup to delivery.

ECDIS ACAT (Annual Competency Assurance Training): the Inspectors training in ECDIS has without doubt increased safety at sea as it highlights that not all is well, regardless of certificates held. Few are aware that the world is halfway through an international project to train around 1,000 inspectors and PSC officers in ECDIS. Without doubt, it has already dramatically increased the safety of navigation at sea by providing inspecting officers with all the relevant questions that need to be asked for all the 38 manufacturers, regardless of what certificates the officers hold.
