IMO Signs Partnership Deal with European Bank

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) announced that it has signed a new partnership agreement with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in an effort to help promote sustainable shipping. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed by IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim and the First Vice President of the EBRD, Phil Bennett, will help promote sustainable shipping through a range of safety- and environment-focused capacity-building activities in the maritime and port sectors in selected countries.

The American Equity Underwriters, Inc., a provider of workers’ compensation insurance for maritime employers, announced that two employees – John A. “Jack” Martone and Ryan LeVeque – have been named to the board of directors of the Longshore Claims Association, a nonprofit organization of claims professionals serving the shipping industry and longshore and stevedoring communities. African Development Bank to Fund Lamu Port

Efforts by the government to attract investors to help build 29 berths at the proposed Lamu port has received a boost from African Development Bank, said a report in The Star, Kenya. The port has received a $1.9 million grant to cater for advisory services and technical support in developing a feasible plan for the port. Last week, the Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia-Transport (Lapsset) Corridor has received $1.93 million  from the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (Nepad).

ISS to Launch Maritime Advisory Team

Maritime and logistics service provider Inchcape Shipping Services (ISS) said it is expanding its maritime service portfolio with the launch of its Maritime Advisory team. The new Maritime Advisory team will serve all maritime sectors from containers, bulk, tankers and passenger shipping, matched to capability across transportation infrastructure including ports, rail, road and aviation. ISS’ Innovation group has recruited staff within the team from the ‘Big Four’ advisory firms, covering investment banking, economics, management and transportation consulting.

Shipping Industry Confidence Improves – with Caveats

Operating cost movements are central to shipping’s fortunes. Shipping has certainly lived up to its reputation for volatility during the past twelve months. The quarterly Moore Stephens Shipping Confidence Survey showed industry confidence improving for the second successive quarter in the three months to end-August 2016, but this was from its lowest level for eight years. The industry has been beset by a range of all-too-familiar problems, including depressed freight rates, tonnage overcapacity in many sectors, problematic geopolitical developments and mounting regulation.

Advent to Acquire Majority Stake in V.Group

Advent International has agreed to acquire a majority ownership interest in marine and offshore vessel management and support services provider V.Group Ltd. from OMERS Private Equity (OPE). V.Group’s management team will retain a minority stake in the company, and OPE will reinvest in V.Group, working with Advent and the management team. DNV GL, Tsakos Join Forces on Cyber Safety

The Tsakos Group of Companies has selected DNV GL to assist in preparing a cybersecurity management system for its fleet and onshore facilities – the first such management system developed by a shipping company in cooperation with DNV GL’s Advisory Services. The Greek shipping organization will implement a comprehensive system of safeguards and procedures to protect their assets from cyber risks. DNV GL is the first classification society to put this kind of cybersecurity service into practice.
