Adam Goldstein Leaves Royal Caribbean

Longtime cruise industry executive Adam Goldstein has left Royal Caribbean Cruises after more than 30 years with the company.Goldstein was most recenlty Vice Chairman of RCL from 2018. From 2014 to 2018, he served as President & COO and from 2007 to 2014, he was President & CEO of the Royal Caribbean International brand. Goldstein has been with RCL since 1988.Goldstein will continue to serve as Chair of the trade group Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA).

Seafarers’ House to Honor Princess Cruises’ Swartz

Jan Swartz, group president of Princess Cruises and Carnival Australia, has been selected as recipient of the Seafarers’ House International Golden Compass Award for 2017. The award is given each year to those who have achieved distinction in the maritime world, those whose vocation or avocation has been the sea or those who have ministered to or otherwise assisted seafarers. As president of Princess Cruises, Swartz oversees a global cruise line and tour company with a fleet of 18 ships that carry 1.8 million passengers annually. The company is part of Carnival Corporation & plc.

Seafarers’ House Honors Guy Harvey

More than 300 guests came out on Saturday, May 21, to honor artist, conservationist and entrepreneur Guy Harvey as this year’s recipient of the Seafarers’ House International Golden Compass Award. The award is given each year to those who have achieved distinction in the maritime world, those whose vocation or avocation has been the sea, or those who have ministered to or otherwise assisted seafarers. The event, which took place at the Hyatt Regency Pier 66 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., raised more than $300,000.

No Cruise Ship Tendering In Cayman Islands

Moses Kirkconnell, the Cayman Islands’ minister of tourism said that future off-shore tendering of cruise ships is out of the question in lieu of building a $150 million cruise pier and terminal in the Cayman Islands. Given that in 2014 approximately 82% of Cayman’s cruise business came from Carnival and Royal Caribbean Cruise Line , he asked them about their future plans and was told that tendering is not something they are willing to consider. Royal Caribbean Cruise Line has informed the tourism minister that they will not tender their mega cruise ships, says a report in Cayman News Service.

Royal Caribbean to Install Scrubbers on 19 Ships

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (RCL) will retrofit 19 of its ships with advanced emissions purification (AEP) systems. These systems, also known as scrubbers, will remove more than 97% of the sulfur dioxide emissions generated by the ships' diesel engines. According to RCL, the move will position the company ahead of all forthcoming International Maritime Organization (IMO) Emission Control Area (ECA) emissions standards, and will ensure compliance with existing European Union (EU) standards.

Royal Caribbean Profit Plunge

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd, the world's second-largest cruise operator, said its quarterly profit fell by two-thirds as costs rose and six cruises were canceled or shortened due to several mishaps. Shares of the company, whose cruise lines include Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises and Azamara Club Cruise, fell as much as 3.2 percent in early trading. The company shortened or canceled six cruises during January-March, typically the strongest season for cruise operators.

'Grandeur of the Seas' Fire Impacts on Share Price

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. has quantified the financial impact of the recent fire on board their 'Grandeur of the Seas'. The cruise ship, Grandeur of the Seas, experienced a fire in an industrial area on the aft of the ship. The company has taken the vessel out of service and expects that it will take approximately six weeks to complete the repair efforts. The company estimates that the direct financial impact of this event, net of insurance, is a reduction of $0.10 per share.

In this expanded role, Rice will continue to oversee the finance function, but also take on responsibility for the company's supply chain department, as well as focusing more on strategic issues. Rice will continue to report directly to Richard D. Fain, Chairman and CEO. Rice has been with Royal Caribbean for over 20 years, most recently as Executive Vice President and CFO.

Bayley Tapped as President, CEO Celebrity Cruises

Royal Caribbean Cruises, Ltd. said that Michael Bayley has been promoted to President and CEO of Celebrity Cruises, replacing Dan Hanrahan, whose departure was recently announced. Bayley will report directly to Richard D. Fain, Chairman and CEO of Royal Caribbean Cruises, Ltd. Bayley has been with Royal Caribbean for over 30 years, most recently as Executive Vice President of Operations. Prior to this role, Bayley served as Executive Vice President — International, where he oversaw the international expansion for the company.
