ABB To Help Save Venice From the Sea

ABB to deliver advanced integrated automation and electrical solution for largest Italian public work project of the last century. ABB will supply the complete integrated electrical and automation system for Mo.S.E. (the Italian acronym for experimental electro mechanic module), a flood barrier system designed to block the high tides and storm surges that enter the Venetian Lagoon year after year through three inlets and regularly flood the historic center of Venice. ABB received the automation order in 2015 and the electrical order in early 2016.

Gomtec to Drive ABB's Robotics Portfolio

ABB announced today acquired Gomtec GmbH to expand its offering in the field of collaborative robots. The parties agreed not to disclose financial terms of the transaction. Gomtec, based near Munich, Germany, is a privately held company that develops mechatronic systems combining mechanical, electrical, telecommunications, control and computer engineering for customers in diverse industries. It has 25 employees. ABB Tops list of Patent Applications

Zurich, Switzerland, February 26, 2015 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, registered more patent applications with the European Patent Office (EPO) than any other Swiss-based company in 2014. Switzerland remains top of the world rankings for the number of patents filed per million inhabitants. ABB filed 450 patent applications with the EPO last year, followed by Nestlé, Alstom, Roche and Novartis, reflecting its strong track record in technological innovation.

ABB to strengthen power infrastructure in Sri Lanka

ABB to Upgrade Sri Lanka's power infrastructure

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won an order worth about $40 million from Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) to supply two new 220-kilovolt (kV) substations and upgrade an existing substation in Sri Lanka.The order was booked in the fourth quarter of 2014. The new substations will be constructed at Polpitiya in the Central Province and Padukka near the capital, Colombo, in the Western Province, while the existing substation at Pannipitiya, a suburb of Colombo, will be augmented.The project is scheduled for completion in 2017.

ABB has designed, manufactured, installed and commissioned a 1,200-kilovolt (kV) circuit breaker the highest AC voltage level in the world. DongBang & OHT Select OCTOPUS Advisory Solution

Amarcon, an ABB Group company, today announced that the company will deliver OCTOPUS-Onboard vessel advisory solutions to a total of three vessels owned by Norwegian oil service company OHT AS and Korean heavy cargo transporter DongBang. The information and control system will support the vessels route planning, optimization of speed and insight in critical motions. The repeat order with OHT encompasses OCTOPUS motion monitoring and forecasting for vessel M/V Albatross. Amarcon has previously delivered advisory suites to OHT’s heavy lift cargo vessels Eagle, Falcon, Osprey and Hawk.

ABB Chief Technology Officer to Leave

Chief Technology Officer, Prith Banerjee, who joined ABB in 2012, has decided to leave ABB for family reasons. Banerjee, located in Switzerland, will be relocating to the United States where he will be taking another position outside the company. ABB say that a successor will be announced in due course. “Prith has brought new momentum to ABB’s research and development activity,” said CEO Joe Hogan. “I regret Prith’s decision to leave the company. Banerjee will be leaving ABB in the next few weeks. A date for his departure has not yet been decided.

LNG Sloshing Prevention Technology

Amarcon and GTT to develop technology that enhances the quality of sloshing measurement & prediction for LNG carriers. Amarcon, a member of the ABB group, has signed a cooperation agreement with GTT (Gaztransport & Technigaz) to market and further develop a forecasting and advice software system for sloshing prevention onboard LNG carriers. Sloshing prevention is an advanced module within Amarcon’s OCTOPUS advisory software suite that will forecast and advise the crew on the optimum route to take in order to achieve time savings while preventing the risk for sloshing.
