Odfjell SVP Olsen Steps Down
Norway based shipping and tank terminal company Odfjell SE said its Senior Vice President Helge Olsen will step down from his role as Head of Ship Management, effective January 9, 2017. Olsen, who has been with the company since 2000, holds no Odfjell shares or options. Harald Fotland, SVP Odfjell Tankers, has been appointed to temporarily cover the position as SVP Ship Management until Olsen’s successor is in place.

Finnlines Improves Profit despite Lower Revenues
Despite a dip in revenues during the third quarter and first nine months of 2016, Finland-based shipper Finnlines Group was able to improve profits for both bother periods by cutting expenses. Cadets Stranded on Hanjin Ship Head Home
The Hanjin Louisiana, one of the containerships caught up in the collapse of the South Korean shipping company Hanjin, has finally docked in Singapore after several weeks of uncertainty at sea. MSC, Zim Launch Joint Black Sea Service
Container shippers MSC and Zim are set to launch a new joint Black Sea service in November in order to meet seasonal agricultural demand. The weekly service will operate two vessels on the following rotation: Alexandria – Ashdod – Novorossiysk – Alexandria, with a fixed Ashdod Friday departure. Both vessels will be supplied by MSC and will mainly ship agricultural products in reefer containers. For Zim, the new service will be a second loop, in addition to its EMX between Israel and Novo.

Russia Launches ‘World’s Largest’ Nuclear Icebreaker
Russia has unveiled Arktika, touted as the world’s largest and most powerful nuclear icebreaker, during a launching ceremony on June 16 at Baltic Shipyard in St Petersburg. The 173 meter long, 34 meter wide Arktika is the lead nuclear icebreaker ordered by Russia's Rosatom state nuclear agency for navigation through the Northern Sea Route, and more specifically the delivery of hydrocarbons to Asian markets.

NOL Appoints New CEO, CFO
Amid a takeover by France’s CMA CGM, Singapore container shipper Neptune Orient Lines (NOL) has named a new chief executive officer and chief financial officer. Nicolas Sartini will take over as chief executive officer, succeeding Ng Yat Chung, who has served as NOL president and CEO since 2011. New chief financial officer Serge Corbel will join Sartini as executive directors of the newly constituted 10-member NOL board.

Twelve Saved from Sinking Freighter in Cuban Waters
The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) rescued 12 people from a freighter vessel taking on water in Cuban territorial seas Saturday. The rescue, performed by two USCG helicopter crews, saved one Jamaican, two Nicaraguan, one U.S., and eight Haitian crewmembers. On Saturday, Coast Guard watchstanders were notified that the Haitian Flagged, 120-ft coastal freighter Granam ST Anne was taking on water in Cuban territorial seas, and ordered the launch of two helicopters.
