Former MSC Manager Sentenced on Bribes Charges
Former Afloat Programs Manager at the United States Navy Military Sealift Command (MSC), Kenny E. Toy, was sentenced to 96 months in prison for receiving bribes, the U.S. Department of Justice said. Toy was sentenced by United States Chief Judge Rebecca Beach Smith of the Eastern District of Virginia Tuesday, July 29. Toy pleaded guilty on Feb. 12, 2014 to criminal information charging him with one count of bribery.

Cooper Named VP at Intelsat
Intelsat S.A. today announced that Patricia Cooper has been named as the company's Vice President, Government Affairs and Policy, effective August 25. In this newly created role, Cooper will be responsible for leading the company's U.S., European and other international government lobbying and advocacy activities and relationship management. UN Places Sanctions against North Korean Shippers
The United Nations Security Council has imposed sanctions on the North Korean shippers that operate the vessel Chong Chon Gang, seized by Panama in July 2013 for attempting to smuggle weapons from Cuba to North Korea. Hamburg Süd Opens Office in Nanjing
On August 1, Hamburg Süd will open an office in Nanjing, China, to be headed by general manager Steven Pu. Hamburg Süd now operates from 20 locations in Greater China. All tasks previously carried out by the Ben Line agency will be taken over by the new Hamburg Süd office. This includes daily operations, as well as sales, customer order management and container and intermodal activities. Services to and from Nanjing will be operated using feeder ships from the ports of Shanghai and Ningbo.

Joint CIC Launched on STCW Hours of Rest
The Maritime Authorities of the Paris and the Tokyo Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) on Port State Control will launch a joint Concentrated Inspection Campaign (CIC) with the purpose to establish that watchkeeping personnel are meeting the requirements regarding hours of rest as per STCW 78 as amended (including the Manila amendments). Figures published earlier this year show that Scotland’s current levels of youth unemployment (16-24-year-olds) is at 853,000 – 18.8 percent – more than double that of the average age working population. According to Sir Ian Woods’s new report, Scotland's vocational education system must be improved if youth unemployment is to fall. Bollinger to Build 6 More FRCs for the USCG
Bollinger Shipyards, Inc., Lockport, Louisiana, announced the award of six additional USCG Sentinel Class Fast Response Cutters (FRCs). The U. S. Coast Guard (USCG) awarded a $255 million contract option to Bollinger Shipyards of Lockport, La., July 23, 2014 for the production of six more Sentinel-Class FRCs, bringing the total number of FRCs under contract with Bollinger to 30, with a current contract value of $1.4 billion.
