I saw the byline for this forum, and smiled.
I think the "technology used to move boats or ships on or through the water" would be sails, paddlewheels, FPPs, CPPs, Z-drives and L-drives, waterjets, and magnetohydrodynamic drives.
The device that converts chemical (or nuclear) energy to mechanical (or electrical) energy isn't really what provides propulsion, is it?

The purpose to propel the ship is achieved by a system rather a PSI Propuilsion system Integration which includes everything right from ur main propusion power source to propeller and hull.
