Joining SNAME? Hey, I was just wondering if anyone could give me the lowdown on SNAME. What are the benefits of being a member-really? Is it worth the membership fees? I know they are nominal for more established engineers, but for a new guy just starting out, every dollar counts! I went to their trade show last year and met a lot of great contacts, but I don't know if joining is still "de rigeur".

RE:Joining SNAME? I agree, Brian. I've been a SNAME member since my student days in 1971. While there sometimes can be intervals where you might question the value of membership, there will be occasions when it can be right on the mark, whether informing, or helping to make something happen, or both. For me, even after leaving engineering practice for admiralty law, my membership, and the link to the technical side it represents, was instrumental in being appointed Special Master to the U.S. District Court in New Orleans to adjudicate a case concerning the conversion of the SEABULK AMERICA.

In the end, SNAME is still unique in the trade, and one of those things you don't want to lightly leave behind.
