I just received a copy of Pounder's Marine Diesel Engines and Gas Turbines, ninth edition, by Doug Woodyard. This thing must weigh four pounds! But just a couple weeks ago I had blogged about wanting to find a thorough overview of propulsion. Ask and you shall receive! Now I have an excellent reference for marine power. Chapter one covers Theory and General Principles. The next few chapters cover the basics of different parts of marine power including exhaust, fuel and lubes, engine and plant, pressure charging and fuel injection. The rest of the chapters cover individual manufactures like MAN, Caterpillar, Wartsila and the like.
I'm still reading the Tug Book by M.J. Gaston, which I am know half way through. It is living up to my expectations as far as giving me a basic foundation of the tug industry. And I'm telling you, reading this stuff on the plane really sends an I'm-too-serious-to-make-small-talk signal. I'm working on an entire inventory of these basic knowledge books to both learn more about the industry and make all my flights more enjoyable.
