RiverNotes: On the Thomas E. Erickson
On July 6th I left the Theresa Wood at the locks in Guttenberg, Wisconsin and crossed the state of Illinois by car. At Pekin, Illinois I boarded the Thomas E. Erickson headed down the Illinois River.

The Captain ordered groceries for the boat this morning and at about 1700 hours an aluminum skiff from S&S Boat Store out of Burlington Iowa, tied up alongside the Theresa Wood and delivered food.

Every two years there is a High Speed Boat Operations conference (HSBO 2010) with the participants covering a wide area of expertise from manufacturers, naval architects, operators and the medical profession – all concerned with high speed vessels. Improvements to hull design and engine performance permits these craft to go at ever increasing speeds. There has been much recent research on the subject of injuries and shock mitigation concerned with the operation of high speed craft. Adopting the traditional standing can result in broken bones or spinal injuries. A better solution, assuming good visibility is the use of special seats with built in shock absorbers.

New New York Life Jacket Law in Effect
New New York Life Jacket Law in Effect The new NY cold-weather-small-vessel-life-jacket-law is now in effect. New York is the first state to require life jackets to be worn on vessels up to 21 feet during the coldest months of the year.
